SUPREME-SECURE is inviting manufacturers of blood pressure measuring devices to help expand access to home-based blood pressure monitoring for pregnant women through a new Request for Proposals (RFP) focused on validation, regulatory approval and market access in sub-Saharan Africa.
Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, particularly pre-eclampsia, remain among the leading direct causes of maternal death worldwide, with more than 95% of related deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries. Blood pressure measurement is the single most important screening test during pregnancy, yet many women are not monitored between antenatal visits, delaying the detection of potentially life-threatening complications.
SUPREME-SECURE is a four-year Unitaid-funded initiative led by the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) in partnership with The Aurum Institute, Burnet Institute, Concept Foundation and WACI Health. The project is improving access to affordable, quality-assured blood pressure monitoring technologies through a community health worker (CHW)-supported model that enables pregnant women to monitor their blood pressure at home between antenatal visits.
Through the RFP, selected manufacturers may receive independent laboratory and clinical validation, including in pregnant and pre-eclamptic populations; participation in an operational study in Ghana and Kenya; technical assistance to support regulatory approval and market entry; and financial support towards regulatory filing costs, where justified.
Who should apply?
The call is open to manufacturers of automated or semi-automated upper-arm cuff blood pressure measuring devices validated to ISO 81060-2:2018 in a general population and manufactured under ISO 13485:2016, or those with a credible, time-bound plan to meet these requirements. Previous validation in pregnant populations is not required, as generating this evidence is one of the programme’s core objectives. Cuffless devices, wrist and finger-cuff devices, and manual auscultatory blood pressure devices are outside the scope of this funding round.
